On Thursday, March 31st, 2011 Habitat for Humanity Toronto’s CEO Neil Hetherington spoke at Queens Park on behalf of Habitat Toronto volunteers. The Bill: Strong Communities Through Affordable Housing Act, is relevent to what we do at Habitat Toronto and has proven results that we get to see on a daily basis.

Neil Hetherington speaks about this in his speech, “Homeowners through the Habitat for Humanity program truly break the cycle of poverty and develop into productive, community-minded citizens. The tangible benefits of breaking the cycle of poverty are demonstrated in the results of a national survey of Habitat families.”

This coming Mothers Day, give a gift from the heart. There’s no better way to celebrate mom than to come out to show your support of mothers living in need. Spend the day with your mom and other Angels, all coming together to help give Toronto families a hand up into a decent, affordable and safe home.

Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of $500. Team goals can be calculated as $500 x the number of members. Raise funds through your family, friends, colleagues, company, place of worship or professional association to help pay for building materials. 100% of all donations will go to construction materials for the Habitat homes you’ll help build.

If you are unable to come out to the Women Build, you can still be an Angel by supporting other women in their fundraising efforts. Click here to sign up or donate now.

This event is filling fast and we now only have spaces available on Thursday May 5th and Sunday May 8th from 7:30a – 4:30p. To sign up for this event now email Sandra at development@torontohabitat.on.ca or call 416-755-7353 ext.277

At this time of year, we take a moment to reflect on how fortunate Habitat Toronto is for having so many generous and dedicated volunteers, donors and home builders. So, from all of us at Habitat for Humanity Toronto, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

What makes Habitat Toronto’s new Bermondsey 155 location so special?

Habitat for Humanity Toronto’s new facility amalgamates the organization’s previous Home Building Factory, training facility, ReStore East York and the administrative office.  By integrating these operations into a centralized location, Habitat Toronto will function in a more efficient and coordinated manner, all under one roof.

This new facility will allow the organization to be able to receive donated building materials, host training sessions, pre-build components of new Habitat Toronto homes, store and repair tools, divert thousands of tons of material from landfills generated through donations directed for the ReStore and much, much more.

The construction of 155 Bermondsey used a simple design and affordable building materials, many of which were donated.  The facility is L.E.E.D. (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, which means that it meets one of the highest standards in building environmental sustainability.  As a model green builder, holding this certification reflects Habitat for Humanity Toronto’s on-going commitment to support safe, healthy communities and a sustainable environment.

Planning for the future was a key component of this building’s sustainability. Habitat Toronto created a design that is adaptable to expansion and additional green space. The tool room can one day support a mezzanine, the east wall of the warehouse would allow for building expansion and the leased area on the main floor could serve as future office space if required.

The new building is not only a major investment in the constant growth and cultivation of Habitat Toronto, but is also allows the organization to remain fiscally prudent.  Habitat Toronto will save money by consolidating many of the services this building will provide, while also building equity. The 5,000 square feet of office space on the ground floor will be leased to an outside organization and the expected income from that lease is expected to pay for the operating costs of the building.

By centralizing Habitat for Humanity Toronto’s operations we are bringing together volunteers, partner family homeowners and donors under one roof.  We are building a greater sense of community within the Habitat Toronto Family and building hope for the organization to continue to help families living in need in the future.

As one of our Home Sponsors, Colliers International, celebrated their 25 years in Toronto, Habitat was there to offer information on upcoming builds and entice new volunteers. Our hammer competition was a great success; Scott Addison, Executive Managing Director, won by hammering in a nail in only three strikes. Well Done!!
